Coastal Resiliency Planning for Cape Begins Dec. 11

It’s no secret that Mother Nature has done, and continues to do, a number on the Cape Cod coastline.

As a result, a Cape-wide stakeholder process to forge a data-rich tool for coastal resiliency planning will begin December 11, 2017.

In 2016, the Cape Cod Commission and partners received a 3-year grant of $780,000 to develop a tool and a public outreach program to examine the environmental and socio-economic effects of local and regional coastal resiliency strategies.

The stakeholder subregions are organized by water body: Buzzards Bay, Nantucket Sound, Cape Cod Bay, and Outer Cape.

The grant is funded through NOAA’s Regional Coastal Resilience Grant program, which supports regional-scale projects that enhance the resilience of coastal communities and economies to the effects of extreme weather, climate hazards, and changing ocean conditions.

The Commission serves as the lead agency for the effort, and is working with grant partners Association to Preserve Cape Cod, Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Preserve, and the Town of Barnstable. Supporting agencies include Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Sea Grant Program, Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies and the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management.
