The Unsinkable Tamaroa

Coast Guard Cutter

The ship made famous in the book and movie, “The Perfect Storm” lives for another day.

The Tamaroa, which was used in 1991 to rescue a sailboat crew off Nantucket and a downed Air National Guard helicopter crew, was scheduled to be scuttled Tuesday off the coasts of New Jersey and Delaware to become an artificial reef. Those plans were put on hold, however, because of, ironically, weather conditions.

It is the second time the Tamaroa had been spared a watery grave. The sinking was originally scheduled last year, the 25th anniversary of the storm, but was delayed to make sure any and all dangerous chemicals were removed prior to its sinking.
